Wine tour in Stellenbosch

We have had a few days in Cape Town and little motivation to actually do or achieve anything, well, except for Table Mountain but wouldn't you know it, the cable car is down for maintenance and we really couldn't work ourselves up to walking up the mountain for 2.5 hours - slack we know, but we will be back to visit friends and will go up then. Cape Town is nice - very similar to Wellington (or so we think...) with the harbour and mountains surrounding the city. It is very strange to be back to a real first world country - where the internet works properly, you can go out to dinner at a proper restaurant and the power stays on. Because we couldn't really do NOTHING for our visit, we headed out yesterday with 7 of our friends from the truck (now long gone) on a wine tour of the Stellenbosch vineyards. It was a brilliant way to see the country surrounding Cape Town and just an all round fun way to spend the day. We visited 4 vineyards in total - starting with champagne at the first at 10.15am - and learnt a fair amount about wine as our guide was excellent and interesting to listen to. As an added extra, our tour also included cheese, olive and belgium chocolate tasting and a tour of the Stellenbosch University campus where, apparently, there are 7 girls enrolled to every guy - nice. The campus is beautiful and is very similar to student towns back home. On the drive home, we came across one of the largest informal settlements - miles and miles of shacks in a shanty town housing an odd 750,000 people. It was incredible to see the massive level of poverty just right on the outskirts of a city that seems to have so much money.
