Swakop to Cape Town

We left Swakopmund early on Friday morning heading down through the desert in Namibia stopping in a small town called Solataire for homemade apple pie (cos we really need it with all of the exercise we have been doing on that big yellow truck!) and were warned to watch out for snakes and scorpions, given the heat. Final destination for the day was Sesrium where we spent the afternoon touring the sand dunes, the Sossuvlei (the spot in the desert where the water pools at the bottom of the dunes....or something along those lines), the Dead Vlei (the spot of the desert that used to be the Sossuvlei and is now dried up....) and the petrified forests which have been standing for an odd thousand years in amongst the various dead and ex-dead Vleis. It was stunning. We also climbed Dune 45 and watched the sun set over the dune area which was also amazing. The next morning saw us headed for Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world (after the Grand Canyon), and to a campsite with a hot spring pool - luxury. Sunday morning we crossed the border into South Africa at Orange River - our last border in Africa - and camped up at Fiddlers Creek, where we were lucky enough to spend the afternoon cleaning the truck and everything on it. Monday was a big 8 and a half hour haul to Citrusdal where it rained all night. We ditched our tents for dorms but had no power for the evening - still, we managed a nice night with nachos in front of the fire. Next stop Cape Town...
