First few days in Africa - Uganda
Well, any concerns that we had about spending 65 days in a tent on therma-rests have been fully alleviated in the past couple of days. There are 11 other travellers on our truck (which is big and yellow and called Tokoloshe) - mostly kiwis and aussies on their way home from London, so we are getting heaps of info on places to go and things to see when we arrive. On the first day, our trip to the chimpanzee santuary was cancelled due to the rain :( so we headed off early the next morning for Kampala - the capital of Uganda - had lunch in the local shopping mall (yes, there actually is one!) and set up camp at the local campsite. There are monkeys hanging out in the trees and running around the grounds on the campsites we have been staying in which is a huge reminder of exactly which continent we are on. Dinners so far (cooked by a few of us each night) have been huge and absolutely fanatastic - barbeques over an open fire most of the time - sausages, garlic bread, coleslaw, salads, spagetti bolognaise - it has become clear that there will be none of the much needed weight loss going on for us over the next couple of months! Tuesday saw us off to Lake Banyoni which took us much of the day as it was pouring down. It also didn't make it very fun for setting up the tents! Sleeping in the tents is so far fine - we have even been enjoying it. We crossed the border on Wednesday into Rwanda and headed for Ruhengeri in Rwanda. So far Africa is not at all what we expected. The countryside is lush and very green and the larger cities, although a little less commercialised that back home, are still very modern. We are having trouble with photos and time on the net so bear with us...
