Leaving South East Asia

We headed off at 6am on Saturday morning overland Cambodia to the Thai border. The road between Siem Reap and the Thai border is around 150km but is in such terrible condition that often it can take as long as 7 hours to travel. With a hoonish bus driver and leaving so early, we managed to cut the trip down to about 4 hours which wasn't so bad. It is common knowledge that one of the local airlines pays the Cambodian government a fee each year to not upgrade the road which means that tourists are encouraged to fly the Siem Reap - Bangkok route. How about that for a bit of c-word with a capital C. It was a long trip and we didn't get into Bangkok until 4pm. We spent a couple of hours shopping on Kao San Road (awesome shopping and great atmosphere), had a final dinner with our travel group (sad!) and jumped on a plane to Africa at 11pm. We arrived in Nairobi at 4am this morning where we stopped over for a few hours. We are now in Uganda - would you believe it?! - at a poxy little internet cafe that just lost all of its power and is now functioning on a really really loud generator. Still, we have access to the world wide web so we can't complain. Thus far we are over-awed that we are actually in Africa. We arrived at the meeting place - a backpackers - to find that we have nowhere to go until our truck arrives later tonight with our tents. We can't even brush our teeth let alone have a shower and forget sleeping despite really needing to. We are starting to realise that this is going to be one major adventure. Now, all we have to do is jump on the back of some African guys moto back to the backpackers and hope that some more fellow travellers have arrived! Grant is having trouble uploading pics which is not looking hopeful for our blogging in Africa.....we will keep trying though.
